With the valve mechanism which will beshown and described in what follows, w^hen thereverse lever is either in full forward or back-upgear and the throttle opened, the engine startsby the admission of live steam into both cylin-ders and with an open exhaust passage from eachcylinder to the stack. The live steam admittedto the low-pressure cylinder is sufficiently re-duced in pressure by passing through a reducingvalve to cause the engine to have the same powerthat a simple locomoti .
