Framed Print of Saint Christopher with Christ Child on his left shoulder stares from west front of the mid-1300s Chiesa or Chiesetta di

Saint Christopher with Christ Child on his left shoulder stares from west front of the mid-1300s Chiesa or Chiesetta di San Tommaso Apostolo (Church of St Thomas the Apostle) at Cavedago, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy. Detail of Late Medieval fresco by itinerant Lombard artist known as the Maestro di Sommacampagna Cavedago, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: detail of Late Medieval fresco on west front of the Chiesa or Chiesetta di San Tommaso Apostolo (Church of St Thomas the Apostle), painted by a mid-14th century itinerant Lombard artist known only as the Maestro di Sommacampagna. The fragmentary wall painting, now protected by a pillared portico, depicts the early Christian martyr Saint Christopher holding a sprouting staff in his right hand and carrying the Christ Child on his left shoulder. Saint Christopher is patron saint of travellers and this painting used to be venerated by generations of pilgrims and wayfarers who passed by Cavedago and the Chiesa di San Tomasso Apostolo when using a nearby Roman Imperial road that in medieval times provided a link between German-speaking North Tyrol and Italian-speaking areas to the south. Travellers would have stopped at the church to pray to San Cristoforo to protect them from sudden death or harm. When the Chiesa di San Tomasso Apostolo was restored at the turn of the 21st century, extensive research prompted scholars to believe that most of its surviving medieval frescoes were painted in three distinct phases and artistic styles by workshops based in Verona and Bergamo. Fine workmanship shown in some fragments suggested they were perhaps painted by pupils or followers, based in Verona, of the influential Florentine artist known as Giotto (Giotto di Bondone, 1267-1337). Chiesa di San Tommaso Apostolo, a former parish church that is now a cemetery chapel, was founded in the mid-1300s. In the early 1900s, fire destroyed the church roof and weakened the whole structure. It re-opened after repairs, but then in 1974 lost its parochial function. Major restoration work between 1999 and 2002, supported by detailed studies of the building and its artworks, succeeded in restoring San Tommaso to its former glory. D1104.B3179.A. © Terence Kerr
