Tourists who arrive early avoid the crowds and hot midday sun at El Castillo (The Castle), also known as the Temple of Kukulcan, the most famous Mayan ruin in the ancient archaeological site of Chichen Itza on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Ever since a climber fell to her death in 2006, visitors are no longer allowed to ascend the 99-foot-tall (30-meter) limestone monument that was constructed in the 12th Century. Ninety-one steep stairs were built at a 45-degree angle on each of the four sides of the pyramid-shaped structure.
