An old engraving of glass-blowing in a factory in New York City, USA. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. Glassblowing is a glass-forming technique that involves inflating molten glass into a bubble using a blowpipe. Glassblowing involves three furnaces. The first, which contains a crucible of molten glass, is simply referred to as ‘the furnace (here shown centre). The second is called the ‘glory hole, and is used to reheat a piece in between steps of working with it (shown far right). A person who blows glass is called a glassblower, glassmith, or gaffer. Glassblowing involves three furnaces. The first, which contains a crucible of molten glass, is simply referred to as ‘the furnace'(here shown centre). The second is called the ‘glory hole, and is used to reheat a piece in between steps of working with it (shown far right). The final furnace is called the ‘lehr or ‘annealer'. This is used to slowly cool the glass to keep the glass from cracking or shattering. The tools used by a glassblower are the blowpipe (or blow tube), punty (or punty rod, pontil, or mandrel), bench, marver, blocks, jacks, paddles, tweezers, newspaper pads, and various types of shears.. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame.
