Martin Luther at Worms
Martin Luther at Worms Martin Luther (1483-1546) was the German leader of the Protestant Reformation. In 1521, he was formally excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church and summoned before the Diet of Worms. The Diet had been called by Emperor Charles V and, among other matters, took up the doctrines spread by Luther. Luther arrived under safe conduct on April 16 and refused to yield ground in lengthy arguments with theologians (pictured here). The Ban of the Empire was then pronounced against him, and he left Worms in April 26. This painting is by the German artist Anton von Werner (1843-1915) and hangs in the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart, Germany
