Framed Print of The Laurel Inn in Robin Hoods Bay
The Laurel Inn in Robin Hoods Bay, a village on the North Yorkshire Coast in England. Vintage photograph taken in 1926, from a Yorkshire family collection Robin Hoods Bay, North Yorkshire, England: the Laurel Inn on New Road, Bay Bank, in 1926. The inn was formerly Robin Hoods Bay's smallest pub with one square bar and an outside toilet. Robin Hoods Bay is a fishing village on the North Yorkshire Coast, 6 miles south of Whitby and 15 miles north of Scarborough. It is known to the locals as ‘Bay Town'. Today, its narrow cobbled streets, charming cottages and brooding cliffs attract many visitors and its beach is renowned for fossils. The bay was originally a farming and fishing community, but during the late 1700s smuggling was rife. In the 1800s, the fishing industry began to wain and nowadays the town relies more on tourism than it does on fishing. The 1897 novel Dracula by Bram Stoker has scenes set in the village. This vintage monochrome photograph, taken in 1926, comes from a Yorkshire family collection. D1366.B8194. © Terence Kerr
