Joseph Swan, Incandescent Light Bulb, 1881 Drawing of Swan's first commercial incandescent light bulb, 1881. Joseph Wilson Swan (October 31, 1828 - May 27, 1914) was an English physicist and chemist. He is most famous for his role in the development of the first incandescent light bulb. Swan first demonstrated the light bulb at a lecture in 1878, but did not receive a patent until 1880 (patent No. 4933) after improvement to the original lamp. His house (in Gateshead) was the first in the world to be lit by lightbulb, and the world's first electric-light illumination in a public building was for a lecture Swan gave in 1880. In 1881, the Savoy Theatre in London, was lit by Swan incandescent lightbulbs, the first theatre and the first public building in the world to be lit entirely by electricity. In 1894 Swan was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, and in 1901 he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) from the University of Durham. In 1904 he was knighted and made an honorary member of the Pharmaceutical Society. Swan died in 1914 at the age of 85. © Researchers, Science History Images

Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame.
