All of his sons save William, who was too young for active duty, served in the Union army during the Civil war.The grandfather in the maternal line was Gilbert Kerpenstine, who was also ablacksmith. He, in 1844, came direct from Holland to Kingston, New York, and in184 5 removed to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and afterwards removed to Pullman, Illi-. He, too, had ason, who was actively engaged in service during the Civil war. William Davelaar, father of Gilbert J. Davelaar, was one of the early architectsof Milwaukee and erected a large number of the first office buildings and churchesof the city. Many monuments to his skill and handiwork are still standing, althoughhe has been retired from the active practice of his profession for about ten years.He now makes his home in Wauwatosa and has an extensive circle of warm friendsin this part of the state. To him and his wife were born three children: Dr. GarretW. Davelaar, who practices medicine in Wauwatosa and Milwaukee; Gilbert J. ofthis review; and Ella, the wife of Clarence Smeaton of Wauwatosa.
