These tablets contain PMA, a drug with similar effects to MDMA but can kill at much lower doses. The effects of PMA take longer to onset than MDMA so users often re-dose before the initial pill has taken effect. PMA has a far greater effect on the hypothalamus than MDMA causing rapid increases in body temperature (hyperthermia, dehydration) and internal bleeding it is this effect that can prove fatal. Users taking a combination of MDMA and PMA are at particular risk as the 2 drugs work together increasing the negative side effects of each. Tablets from the batch of pills photographed were responsible for 3 members of the public requiring emergency treatment at the V Festival on 15 August 2014.
