First Gulf War: 4th March 1991 The dismembered body of an Iraqi soldier lies in the desert. He was a crew member of an Avibrás ASTROS-II SS-30 multiple rocket system, which was destroyed by USAF fighter jets After being attacked by USAF fighter jets, the charred remains of a Brazilian-made Avibrás ASTROS-II SS-30 multiple rocket system were strewn along the side of the road. The badly burned and dismembered crew members lay dead in the desert up to fifty metres away. The ASTROS II was developed in the early 1980's by Avibrás for Brazilian and export use. It was the first system to offer multiple types of artillery rockets from the same launch system. The name ASTROS is short for "Artillery SaTuration Rocket System". The ASTROS II is based on the TECTRAN VBT-2028 6x6 10 tonne truck, which features an armoured cab to protect the crew from small arms fire and shell splinters. It has a launch installation on the flatbed which is reloaded with four boxes that may feature various kinds of rocket types and it may carry thirty-two 127mm rockets, sixteen 180mm rockets and four 300mm rockets.. Four jacks stabilise the vehicle in the launch position. A 12.7mm M2HB heavy machine gun is mounted on the roof for self-defence. This is on the Um Niqa Road, Route 801, the road to Um Qasr in north-east Kuwait. After Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in August 1990, coalition forces were quick to send their armies to both defend Saudi Arabia and to successfully oust the Iraqi forces by the end of February 1991. © Johnny Saunderson
