Framed Print of Edward Montagu (1602-1671), Baron Kimbolton and 2nd Earl of Manchester

Edward Montagu (1602-1671), Baron Kimbolton and 2nd Earl of Manchester, Major-General of Parliament's Eastern Army in the first English Civil War and Parliament's Supreme Commander at the 1644 Battle of Marston Moor. Engraving created in the 1700s by Michael Vandergucht (1660-1725). Edward Montagu (1602-1671), Baron Kimbolton and 2nd Earl of Manchester. Original copperplate engraving by Michael Vandergucht (1660-1725). This engraving was first used in the 1740 edition of History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England by Edward Hyde (1609-1674), Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to King Charles I, who was later raised to the peerage as 1st Earl of Clarendon; his history of the English Civil War is frequently referred to as Clarendon's Rebellion'. Montagu (or Montague) was Major-General of Parliament's Eastern Army in the first English Civil War and Supreme Commander at the 1644 Battle of Marston Moor. He had represented Huntingdonshire in Parliaments of the 1620s before King Charles elevated him to the Peerage as Baron Kimbolton. Montagu then emerged as one of the leaders of opposition to the King in the House of Lords, before succeeding his father as Earl of Manchester in 1642. Michael Vandergucht was a Flemish engraver, born in Antwerp, who worked for most of his career in England. D1321.B5755. © Terence Kerr
